Quick answers to questions we are asked every week. Prices, permits, repairs, storms and neighbor issues each have a longer guide, linked at the foot of this page.
How deep should fence posts be set?
Deep enough for the wind, which is the test that matters here. A common rule is about a third of the post in the ground, and more for a 6 or 8 foot solid fence. Frost is a smaller concern in the Panhandle than in northern states, and the city's Building Safety Department can give the local frost depth. We write the post depth and spacing on your estimate.
Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?
Concrete, for nearly every fence in this area. Wind puts a sideways load on the post that gravel alone does not hold well, and gate and corner posts need a wider footing still. Foam sets fast, but we do not trust it under a solid fence or a gate in Panhandle wind.
How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?
Wait until the wood is dry enough to take it. In Amarillo's dry air that comes sooner than in humid places, often within a few weeks. Drip water on a picket. If it soaks in, go ahead. If it beads up, give it more time. Do not leave new cedar bare through a whole summer of sun.
How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?
The price follows the square footage and how weathered the wood is, since grey wood needs cleaning first. Ask us to list it as its own line on the estimate so you can decide.
Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?
Yes, as long as they are coated for outdoor use or stainless. Bare steel rusts and leaves streaks, and cedar reacts with it and turns black around the head. Screws also hold better than nails when the wind rattles a loose picket.
Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?
Yes, with paint made to bond to vinyl, though it becomes a job you repeat. Stay with light colors, because a dark coat soaks up the High Plains sun and can warp a panel. Try washing off the dust and chalk first.
I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?
Rebuild the gate posts. A wide double gate swings like a door in the wind and needs heavy steel posts in deep concrete, often with a drop rod and a center stop. Ordinary line posts cannot carry that, so we replace the posts and the short section on each side.
Does a new fence raise my property taxes?
Your county appraisal district decides that. Amarillo lies in Potter and Randall counties, and each has its own appraisal district. A fence is a minor item next to the house.
