We build pool barriers in aluminum, steel and vinyl for Amarillo homes, apartments and association pools. Send us the pool plan or the inspector's notes and we quote against them.
A pool fence in Amarillo is the one kind of fence that always needs a city permit. The City of Amarillo exempts most residential fences 8 feet tall or less, but it states that building, altering or repairing the required barrier around a pool or spa needs a permit whatever the height. Plan the fence at the same time as the pool, and expect the barrier to be inspected.
The details the inspector looks at are the height, the gaps and the gates. Texas Health and Safety Code chapter 757 covers pools at apartments and other multi-unit and association properties. It calls for an enclosure at least 48 inches tall, gates that close and latch by themselves, and openings too small for a 4 inch ball to pass. For a pool at a single-family house the figures come from the pool code the city has adopted, and Building Safety confirms them for your permit. We build to the numbers on your approved plan.
Material matters more here than in most places. Powder coated aluminum is the usual choice because it lets the wind through, does not rust around pool water and keeps its finish in strong sun. A solid wall around a pool catches every gust and collects blown dust on the deck. Where you want privacy on one side, we can mix a solid section with open panels. Chain link is not allowed for new enclosures at chapter 757 pools, so ask before assuming it will pass.
Pool fences in Amarillo: common questions
How tall does a pool fence have to be in Amarillo?
For apartment, condo and association pools, Texas Health and Safety Code chapter 757 sets a minimum of 48 inches. For a house pool, the City of Amarillo Building Safety Department gives the figure with the permit. We confirm it before we order material.
Does my existing back yard fence count as the pool barrier?
It can, if it meets the height, gap and gate rules all the way around. Most yard fences fail on the gates, which must close and latch on their own, and on gaps at the bottom. We walk the line and list what would have to change.
Do I need a permit just to replace the pool gate?
Yes. The city requires a permit for construction, alteration or repair of a pool or spa barrier, and the gate is part of the barrier.
